Somali refugees in Kenya currently find themselves in limbo with only restrictive and impractical options available to them. The majority of these refugees are unable to return to Somalia, despite recent efforts by the Governments of Kenya and Somalia and UNHCR, due to sustained threats to their protection, safety and dignity in what continues to be a fragile post-conflict situation. Opportunities for third country resettlement are concurrently diminishing, particularly in Europe and the United States of America, due to a sharp decline in refugee resettlement quotas.

263 million children out of school, a ballooning under-15 population, and governments unable to keep pace with education demands. Education Finance plays a critical role in getting and keeping every child in school. Opportunity International (Opportunity) has been championing education finance for 10 years and disbursed more than 190,000 loans to schools and parents through profitable portfolios with minimal risk and high social impact. Opportunity's work with DFID's Girls' Education Challenge provides gender-neutral financial services for families and schools in Uganda.
Early childbirth among married adolescent girls can be a key barrier to many economic development and youth empowerment programs reaching scale. Often, this issue is not considered in economic programming even though it is often a key constraint for girls and women in capitalizing on potential economic pathways. This presentation covers experiences on how to ensure early childbirth does not limit program success and how girls’ economic opportunities can be supported to reduce early childbirth.
Global research (World Economic Forum, McKinsey, PwC) shows employers and markets across sectors and countries would benefit from more female management and leadership. More attention needs to be paid to young female workers in low-resource countries who have the potential, but are denied the opportunity, to advance as managers and leaders.
Young people are not developing the skills they need to be successful in the workforce. UNICEF proposes that a holistic approach to skill building strengthens youth confidence and has a higher success rate than a static approach. This idea is demonstrated by UPSHIFT, a flagship UNICEF workshop that teaches marginalized youth the skills necessary to becoming social innovators and entrepreneuers. This presentation establishes UNICEF's research on youth workforce preparedness and provides case studies on the UPSHIFT Program's success in Kosovo and Jordan.
