This report highlights key findings from a recent survey and a series of focus groups with 481 youth ages 16–24 from across the District of Columbia who were at least marginally reconnected to various schools, training programs, or community based social-service organizations. This research effort was designed to better understand how, when, and why youth choose to reconnect, the barriers that prevent reconnection, and the strategies that could facilitate reconnection.
Around the world, the communities with the brightest futures create innovative opportunities for youth to build sustainable livelihoods, pursue meaningful careers and shape better realities for themselves and for those around them. Unfortunately, in many communities within sub-Saharan Africa, youth find themselves jobless and entrenched in systems that do not welcome innovation or change.
The Mobile for Employment programme held a workshop on the topic of ‘Youth, Mobile and Employment’ in Kigali, Rwanda on 28th January 2014. This report highlights the key findings of the workshop along with a review of the employment market in Rwanda. It discusses the commercial and operational considerations for all stakeholders and introduces possible business models along with recommendations to accelerate MNO market entry and participation in this sector in a meaningful and value-adding role.

“A Chance for Change: Child and Youth Finance and the Post-2015 Agenda” was organized by CYFI with the support of UNCDF on the 23rd of May, 2014 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Can cash transfers promote employment and reduce rural poverty in Africa? Will lower youth unemployment and poverty reduce the risk of social instability? We experimentally evaluate one of Uganda’s largest development programs, which provided thousands of young people nearly unconditional, unsupervised cash transfers to pay for vocational training, tools, and business start-up costs. Mid-term results after two years suggest four main findings.
