In this breakout session, facilitators will present the findings of a workplace obstacles assessment conducted by USAID’s Women in Government (WIG) project in Afghanistan. These findings will prompt discussion around strategies to increase young women’s participation in the Afghan civil service, despite the policy, cultural, and infrastructural obstacles that keep women in the home. From family restrictions on women’s freedom of movement to the lack of gender-friendly work environments, the session will identify broadly applicable solutions for increased women’s workforce participation in conservative societies.
