UNICEF’s Global Framework on Skills: From Theory to Practice

Young people are not developing the skills they need to be successful in the workforce. UNICEF proposes that a holistic approach to skill building strengthens youth confidence and has a higher success rate than a static approach. This idea is  demonstrated by UPSHIFT, a flagship UNICEF workshop that teaches marginalized youth the skills necessary to becoming social innovators and entrepreneuers. This presentation establishes UNICEF's research on youth workforce preparedness and provides case studies on the UPSHIFT Program's success in Kosovo and Jordan.

The Bright Future World Café - Creating Youth Employment Opportunities by Addressing the Business Ecosystem

The presenters shared an introduction to the Bright Future World Café process, setting the context, and sharing the do’s and don’ts. A methodology was used for challenging and identifyiong underlying assumptions. Attendees shared insights or other results from their conversations with the rest of the large group. The basic process is simple and simple to learn, but complexities and nuances of context, numbers, questions, and purpose were taken into consideration to optimize the results of the session.

The Human Rights Agenda presents a case study from CVE efforts in violent extremism-prone areas in Kenya. Tools for Youth-Driven Learning: Essential Skills Development and Measurement for a Changing World of Work

Creative Associates and IREX presented tools to measure youth self-efficacy and to empower youth in their own learning processes. The self-efficacy tool is designed to be specific yet flexible enough to capture changes in youth across 15 communities in three countries that are exposed to a holistic suite of interventions for violence prevention and workforce development. The self-efficacy measure was identified as useful across programming to reduce youth participation in violence.

While there is broad agreement on the value of behavioral skills as predictors for economic and social success, can these skills really be developed in education and work readiness training programs for youth? What does it take to mimic the kind of mentorship for young people that occurs in well-functioning families, in these programs and in the workplace? How can we better support youth economic opportunities with the integration of evidence-based practices to enhance emotional intelligence? Through a comparative discussion that draws on leading research from the U.S., and examples from our sector, this plenary will examine the impact of emotional intelligence training, and what these findings mean for youth training programs in development settings.
