5.4 Questions, Methods, and Tools

Evaluation questions can be answered using different research methods. Most in the YEO field accept that a mixed methods approach, that utilizes both quantitative and qualitative methods, is the best way to understand a program and its impact 1.Qualitative data, such as case studies, serves to humanize and triangulate data. M&E questions, methods, and tools for the YEO field must reflect the age and developmental stage of young people, considering comprehension and shyness in design and use of tools. At the 2012 GYEOC, participants discussed the importance of aligning questions, methods, and tools in complementary ways. Participants also shared new research tools that bring us closer to young people and their experiences.
