3.1 Youth-led and Girl-focused Advocacy
The YEO field supports advocacy on behalf of youth and AGYW. At the 2012 GYEOC, two organizations presented programs that empower young people to advocate for themselves and others. The unique programming approach addresses two key issues for the field: 1) linking programming with policy issues to ensure sustainability and scale, and 2) promoting meaningful opportunities for youth participation and leadership. Both organizations focused on how key global issues disproportionately affect girls and young women.
Valuable lessons emerged from these experiences. For adolescent girls and young women, advocacy for policy- and systems-change is necessary to address the root causes of girls’ disempowerment.
