A recent report published by the Africa Progress Panel affirms that the agricultural sector has the greatest potential to uplift the African economy and to address global food shortages, and other research has made similar claims. Mobile technology can help turn that potential into a reality.

Today, 30 to 40 per cent of Africa’s jobs are in the services industries. A figure that will only increase by another 10 to 20 per cent during the years to come. “In tomorrow’s construction, retail and hospitality industries – Africa’s three biggest sectors –learning by heart no longer does the job”, says Devang Vussonji at Dalberg Global Development Advisors. His plea: “What we need are soft skills like critical thinking, teamwork, creativity and a customer-focused mind-set.”

Over the past few months, USAID Bureaus for Global Health (GH); Economic Growth, Education, and Environment (E3); and Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance (DCHA) announced the awards of the long-awaited YouthPower: Implementation and YouthPower: Evidence and Evaluation contracts.

Given the importance of agricultural transformation in the development process of Low Income Countries, improving the livelihoods of young people is a critical step toward increasing production and economic diversification in rural areas.
